                                                                            history of home schooling

The history of homeschooling is basically a history of civilization

Parents have been teaching their kids since we lived in a cave surrounded by trees. The classroom is only a modern addition to teaching our kids. But it is controlled by state and since public schools receive

money form the government on a per child basis, they will resist change as hard as they can. And I think that is the main reason causing the explosion of homeschooling at the present time.

Home schooling is increasing at about 15% a year and at the moment it is the possibly the only change in education in this country. The hippy generation of the 60's could have actually started this homeschooling trend. As the schools didn’t really want the flower power kids of hippies in their schools, so they let them homeschool them and that is where this modern trend might have started.

Before the hippy generation there was very little home schooling.

It was mainly reserved for rural families but then they had the boarding school. Anyway during the hippy generation of the 60s a lot of people were generally disillusioned with the status quo and the government.

They wanted change and at that time a number of books became popular. Among them were Deschooling Society by Ivan Illich. Charles E. Silberman’s Crisis in the Classroom: The Remaking of American Education, and the John Holt collection How Children Fail in 1964, followed by How Children Learn in1967. John Holt is sometimes refereed to as the father of American Homeschooling as at that time he was very anti-school after teaching for a number of years.

Anyway the history of home schooling is not really that colorful.  But after watching 20/20 Stupid in America (free on YouTube) I think homeschooling will be a greater force to be reckoned with, and the modern history will be more exciting.
