The end ofintensive industrialized monoculture farmingI always thought that there must be a price of oil
where energy intensive, monoculture farming is no longer an option. But it
seems this economic downturn The price of cattle is taking a nosedive mainly because very few people can afford to buy the meat. In Asia the people prefer pork to beef and the Arab countries eat sheep meat, so this time China and the Middle East wont come to the rescue. In my view intensive industrialized monoculture farming is a classic dinosaur waiting to go extinct. It is so dependent on cheap oil to such an extent that it just cannot function if oil prices go through the roof again. In the near future with the overpopulated planet running out of nearly everything we need to survive, farming has to go back to the basics. And that is - no till, no fertilizer and no pesticide and no herbicide chemicals. But to grow food you must have water and very soon water will be a very scarce commodity. The water problem, overpopulation, and the oil problem - even though a bit more oil has been found of the coast of Brazil – will come to a head very soon and that is when we will be forced to change our agriculture ways. But then it will be too late to feed the world. I think we are one severe El Nino event away from massive famines in some areas on the planet. That will be the wake up call I hope. Because now there is not enough food on the planet to feed everybody on the planet. Before the economic crash we could rely on America to come to the rescue of countries in need but this time around I don’t think we can any more.
