                                                                                                                                                                 Let Your Kid Decide:

Some parents are under the misguided assumption that kids are only learning when they are sitting at a desk, with an open book in front of them and a pencil in one hand but you should let your kid decide

I’m not saying this is not always the case, but with reading let your kid decide what to read, as well as where to read. Reading is something you don’t normally do while sitting at a desk. In real life you

can read anywhere as long as there is enough light. That could mean under the apple tree in the garden. Some kids come alive while they are stretched out on the sofa, so the moral of the story is let your kid read where they want to.

You want to make reading an enjoyable experience and something the kids want to do, so let them have the upper hand and let them control where and what they read.

This way reading should be more enjoyable as opposed to telling them what to read and you standing behind them making sure they read it while seated at a desk. Let your children buy books to read or pick the book they want to read from the library. They are going to eventually read the book or listen to you reading it, so let them pick it. I must admit I used to pick the books I thought my kids would like to hear and now I have a house full of books my kids never look at.

Kids love you to repeat reading the book again and again and again

I don't know why but they do, so I keep reading the same book over and over again and again until they kid can nearly repeat the story word for word. And they want you to read it again. Do it, it is their time and they love the story. For some reason they just love the story.

For more information about phonics courses I recommend including a Montessori course see our Teach Reading page.
