                                                                                                                                               phonics

When you teach your child to read you need to have an understanding of phonics

Phonics are nothing to be intimidated about. They are just a visual representation of the spoken word. We all instinctively know the phonic sounds, because we use them every time we speak. We do not need

tapes or MP3 recordings of the sounds. We just need to look at the words and say the word one sound at a time. Very similar to breaking a word down into syllables, except with phonics we break the word down further.

Also phonics are classed as voiced, unvoiced, nasal, long, short and a few others. You don’t really need to know all these. They are to do with the mechanics of saying the phonic sound.

To teach phonics to your child all you have to do is slow right down when pronouncing the word. Slow down until you are nearly saying the individual letter sounds. For example when saying “radio,” just stretch out the word when you speak it. Say “rraayyyddddoooo.” Get the picture.

Saying it like that basically breaks the word down into phonics. The phonics are /r/-/a/-/d/-/ao/, but don’t teach the written sound letters to your child, as it causes more confusion. And most importantly they do not need to know those phonic letters. Normally when you stretch out the word, the child can work out which letters make which sound.

For  courses I recommend that teach your children to read and write using phonics see our teach reading page.
