A good start on your child’s road to reading is with preschool phonics. The earliest you can get your child
interested in preschool phonics the better. But starting too early is not
really that beneficial. I think around three years old is a good time to
start with preschool phonics. But you I like the Montessori approach where the kids are grouped into age groups of 3 to 6 year old. This way the younger kids can see the older kids reading and the older kids can teach the younger kids. Also there is no pressure on the children to start to learn preschool phonics. They start when they want to start, that is the Montessori way. If you are home schooling your child or teaching them to read so it will help them in kindergarten, just go easy on the preschool phonics and don’t try to teach too much. You must repeat all the time as kids have trouble keeping things in their heads. For preschool reading the Montessori way is with sandpaper letters and I think that way is very effective. You make up the phonic sounds with sandpaper letters and the kids trace the letters. This way the children feel the shape of the letters as well as saying the phonic sound. For young preschools words and writing mean nothing but the feel of the letter makes a big difference. So for preschool phonics feeling is better than looking at the letters. I like this Montessori course as it is actually based on what she was doing a hundred years ago. For more information about the preschool phonics I recommend see our teach reading page.
