                                                                                                                             Nazca Civilization

The Collapse Of The Nazca Civilization In Peru

In Discovery News there was a little article about the collapse of the Nazca civilization. The Nazca civilization were the people who drew those massive big drawings in the desert. These drawings are so huge they can only be seen from the air.

This civilization came to fame with the Erich Von Daniken book Chariots of the Gods He surmised that the drawings were landing strips for UFOs. I like his theory and so far no better theory has been put forward.

This civilization flourished for about 500 years about 2000 years ago and after the massive El Nino of 500AD hit they were wiped out in less than 100 years. The article said as the population increased they cleared more forest to plant corn or maize.

But the trees they cut down were not just ordinary trees.

These were trees adapted to life in the desert. The trees were over a 1000 years old and their root systems were so long and deep they tapped into the underground water channels and through the tree brought the water to the surface.

That was the first part of the problem – cutting the trees down. The second part of the problem was the trees held the soil together. So when the massive El Nino hit, it just washed away the cornfields. And now the place is still a desert with big pictures drawn all over the place.

No civilization has reclaimed the land.

Now looking at us - we are possible about 500 years and our civilization depends on oil and the oil is running out. But our big problem is modern agriculture is just turning oil into food. And our second big problem is over population.

At the present time there is just enough food on the planet to feed the people on the planet. So when the next big El Nino hits there are going to be massive famines in many parts of the planet. So that is what we have to look forward too.

Are our beautiful cities going to crumble beneath our feet?  To find out more check out The Blog and our Future Page.
