A Chat About The Documentary "Earth 2100"

I was quite pleased with the new documentary "Earth 2100" as these types of documentaries are making people aware of the future. And the future is not going to be as rosy as the past.

But I think there dates are a bit off. The girl Lucy was born in a year early in the new millennium and the program followed her life.

I dispute the time frame in the movie.

I cannot see civilization as we know it lasting that long. We have too many things going against us. Even though global warming is on the top of the world’s agenda, there are a number of series concerns that will hit us long before global warming kicks in.

We should change global warming to global warning because there isn’t much time left. They did mention that we are running out of gas and that situation will only get worse.

I still think the end of cheap oil is now and we should be more worried about it, as our whole society runs on cheap oil.

When the cheap oil goes so do we.

One very important point about the future that I dispute is when we will start to run out of electricity. I expect major blackouts in the very neat future, like in about 4 or 5 years time.

Since global warming raised it’s ugly head everybody hates coal but nearly 50% of our electricity comes from coal. And some of our coal-fired electricity generating plants are getting past their use-by-dates.

And since global warming hit the headlines all new coal fired plants have been shelved so there is nothing to replace the plants that die of old age. The documentary did mention water and that is another problem that will kick in very soon, probably sooner than they mentioned.

One thing that all documentaries never seem to mention is the overpopulation problem that we are facing at the moment. To survive the future we have to stop having kids but nobody ever says that.

Are our beautiful cities going to crumble beneath our feet?  To find out more check out the Blog and our Future Page.
