                                                                                                                                  the home vegetable garden

When you are starting the home vegetable garden don’t limit yourself by size

The whole concept of the home vegetable garden is changing because of the peak oil and

inflation. But we are still thinking along the lines of our grandparents who used to have a vegetable garden and also a lawn to mow. Now if you can’t afford to put oil in the car then you surely can’t afford to put gas in the lawnmower.

So the modern trend is forgetting about mowing the lawn and putting the whole backyard into food.

As inflation, unemployment and the price of oil get worst we will see more and more backyards become food. I think we have to get away from the concept of garden as a separate part of your yard. Setting up this home vegetable gardening system depends on how much time you have and on how much you worry about what the neighbors will say.

If the weather is in spring or early summer and you have just been laid off then build your whole backyard into food.

Don’t worry about digging just get some seeds in the ground. I do recommend you have the last symbolic mowing of your lawn by mowing it as short as possible. You will still mow bits of your lawn later on as that is the quickest way to get it under control.

With your last paycheck go any buy packets of seed – just check to make sure they are not GM seeds. Now pick a corner along the back fence and plant directly into the grass. Plant the seeds about 6 inches apart but just plant a couple of square meters. Now water the area you have just planted. After a week plant another couple of meters and water them. Now that is basically how to turn your yard into a home vegetable garden.

Check out our Vegetable Gardening page and see what you think, but now is the time to stop thinking and just throw a few seeds around the house to see what happens.
