Maria
Montessori’s way of teaching has been around for about 100
years so it
must be pretty good to have withstood the test of time. The Montessori
Method is more of a philosophy as well as a way of teaching.
Maria based her method of teaching on what she learned observing mentally handicapped children. Her methods proved so successful that the learning disabled children were learning better and faster than the children in the local mainstream school. Now a hundred years later the Montessori Method is still very popular and is used around the world. For homeschooling large families or groups of kids it is very effective. The parent or teacher is more of an advisor than a teacher. I like it because you show the older kids what to do and they show the younger children. You just make sure they are doing it correctly. For teaching reading and writing I used her method with my daughter and it made a big difference. Montessori is a hands on approach where you help the children make the toys and teaching aids for each class. A lot of fun.

Also with her system the children are divided into wider age groups like 3 to 6 year-olds in one class and 7 to 10 year olds in another class. And there is no real time limit on classes, she recommended a three hour class. In the class the children could learn what they liked, the teacher just directed them. Montessori Method is ideal for homeschooling. For more information about home schooling and Montessori see our Homeschooling Page.
