To start teaching your child to read and write it is better to follow a phonics program There are a number of good phonics

Most internet phonics programs teach by looking and listening so for most children these programs are ideal. Also they are self teaching. So after showing your child how to use the program you can leave your child alone and just check up now and then. Perfect for the working parent. If your children is having problems learning to read then I suggest using a Montessori phonics program as these programs use sandpaper letters. Ideal for the child who learns by feeling or doing. Also if you, the parent, wants to take an active part in teaching your child to read then this program is what you are looking for. You have to make up the words in sandpaper letters so your child can trace the words. The Montessori phonics program is ideal for supplementing school textbooks. You make up the words your child is learning at school and your child traces the words and says the word. The main drawback is, it is time consuming but you know how well or otherwise your child is doing at school. To find out more about the phonics programs I recommend see our teach reading page.
