When teaching your child to read it might be an idea to turn her bedroom into a phonics room When teaching reading you need a lot of
repetition, and what better way than turning your child’s room into a
phonics room. Put posters and pictures of the words and the sounds, you are
teaching at the moment, all Also a big blackboard on one wall is very handy. Then you can write the words or sounds on the blackboard. Kids love color so use lots of color and chalk is cheap and easy to use. For a professional looking phonics room there are heaps of pictures on the net, you just print them off and hang them on the wall. Then you end up with folders of phonic sounds and words you can review anytime. When your child is surrounded by what she is learning, she sees it when she walks up and every time she is in her room. This helps to implant it on her mind. Also scan the net for free word games to play. Usually you will need to download Shockwave from Adobe but it is free and easy to download. Some games are too slow and your child will soon lose interest but you might find a game your child loves to play. Some education games are very very good and the interactive approach also helps implant what she is learning in her mind. You have to preview the games first to see if they are actually educational. One game I like is definitely not educational but it has a lot of reading, and I use it to teach reading. It is one of these read together games or I read first and the kids follow. The game “Aveyond” is a strategy game but it is well suited to teach reading. I use this course for teaching phonics, it uses the Maria Montessori method of teaching reading and writing, and I recommend it to anyone who is teaching reading. For other phonics courses I recommend see our teach reading page
